Should You Exercise When Your Joints Are Painful?

August 4, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Should you exercise if you have joint pain or arthritis?
One questions that we frequently get asked is if you should stop exercising when you have painful joints? Generally, if a particular form of exercise has caused the injury or pain, then you need to give your body time to recover. However, this advice is often misinterpreted.

Many sports are high impact and these repetitive movements can cause inflammation and pain. The key to stopping the pain is to take a break from what ever caused the problem. However, you should not totally stop exercising either.

We saw a good article about this recently.

Even though exercise is the last thing you want to do when suffering from painful joints, it can actually be the best treatment to relieving your pain. The body needs to have constant movement. After all, that’s how we are designed. There is an old chinese saying that your joints are like hinges. If you don’t move them, they seize up!

Low impact exercises are a good way to start and maintaining supple muscles and overall fitness. I can recommend swimming and cycling which give you an overall body workout without putting too much pressure on your joints.

Don’t stop being active. Your active life doesn’t have to end when you have arthritis. The worst thing you can do is sit and do nothing. That will most probably lead to more pain and stiffness.

The key is maintaining regular joint movement in all areas of the body and keep your cardiovascular health in shape. A regular boost to the oxygen throughout your body will rejuvenate cells and joints driving toxins out of your body.
