What is Elbow Tendonitis?
September 29, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment
When the tendons (the cords that attach the muscles to the bones) are irritated, pain and swelling develops in the elbow. Lack of flexibility strains the muscles in the elbow when you make particular movements causing elbow tendonitis. Some tendons are more vulnerable than others to inflammation. Common body parts for tendon injuries include the ankles, knees, elbows and wrists. Two well documented and prevalent disorders are the elbow golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow.
Elbow tendonitis causes pain around the tendon in the elbow joint. This pain becomes worse by repeated use of the associated muscle. There is a mild swelling in the elbow as well as stiffness and limitation of movement. Anti inflammatory drugs are generally administered as a first course of treatment to relieve tendonitis elbow. If the symptoms of elbow tendonitis are severe, a steroid may be injected into the sheath covering the tendon.
Tennis elbow affects the tendon on the outer side of the elbow. This can occur while playing tennis or as a result of constant strain. People involved in plastering and painting activities (as a part of their job) which require repetitive twisting movements of the elbow are likely to suffer from elbow tendonitis.
If you do not use the right techniques while lifting heavy objects from the floor, the weight is likely to place strain below the elbow joint and the strain on the joint is likely to cause elbow tendonitis.
Golfer’s elbow is an inflammation of the tendon on the inner side of the elbow. Repeated strains of the elbow when playing golf is one of the reasons of pain in the elbow. The affected area will be tender and sometimes there may be mild swelling associated with the pain. Movements involving the elbow joint worsen the pain and may be the cause of elbow tendonitis.
Resting the joint will not relieve the pain. Proper treatment of the affected joint with the assistance of a medical practitioner and following a regular pattern of exercises recommended by your physiotherapist will help you to get relief from the disorder known as elbow tendinitis.
You also need to remember that your elbow joint needs time to recover from elbow tendonitis. So it is advisable to take a period of rest after a course of medication for the joint to build up endurance. You can also improve the strength of the joint by playing low intensity games to condition the joint.
