The Specifics of Tennis Elbow Treatment

August 13, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment

Tennis elbow is a condition that not only affects sportspersons but also is prevalent in people who have to perform some repeated activities using their hands as a part of their jobs. The tendons in the elbow have to function continuously to support the movements of the bones in the elbow joint. An excessive wear in the elbow joints can cause the tendons to stretch repeatedly to control the joint movement leading to an inflammation in the tendons. Tennis elbow treatment is recommended when the swelling in the tissues of the tendon does not subside after an initial treatment with topical anti inflammatory drugs

Tennis elbow may also be caused due to repetitive stress injury that is caused by providing an incorrect or inadequate support to the elbow while you are doing strenuous work involving your hands. The effects of this condition can be reversed by administering effective tennis elbow treatment so that the pain and discomfort felt by the patient is eliminated completely. The pain associated with tennis elbow persists even when you are not using your arms and is usually described as a dull throbbing pain that intensifies at night.

You can apply a hot pack to the affected area for temporary relief. A medical practitioner may also recommend some prescription drugs to increase the blood flow to the affected tendons so that the cell repair in these connective tissues can be promoted. This will also reduce the inflammation in these connective tissues. While undergoing tennis elbow treatment, you have to take specific care to avoid lifting heavy objects from the floor or using tools that require you to maintain a firm grip while working with them.

Medical researchers have found that the tennis elbow treatment protocol is incomplete without the patient being subject to intense physiotherapy sessions to strengthen the muscles and the connective tissues present around the elbow joint. This is essential to ensure that you do not suffer from recurring bouts of pain in the elbow joint.

Once the tennis elbow treatment is complete you should consult a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. They will study your hand and arm movements and suggest appropriate gripping and swinging techniques to help you avoid further damage to your tendons and elbow joints. Wearing protective gloves (which minimize the impact to your wrists) while working may also help you to avoid problems with the tendons in your elbow joint.
