Does glucosamine help relieve back pain caused by osteoarthritis?
Most creams to relieve pain, etc. target muscles rather than nerves that are affected by osteoarthritis. I heard that glucosamine may be useful in treating arthritis. I do not seek a cure, just pain. I am currently taking high doses of ibuprofen, which can cause liver damage. I prefer take something that attacks the source of the problem. Has anyone taken glucosamine and had positive results in relieving back pain?
Yes with chondrontin melee with him, he will help arthritic pain and is much healthier than ibuprofen. You may want to get off the ibuprofen for some time because he does not long lasting results. Aleve has naproxin in it and very helpful. I am concerned that you say osteoarthritis, but you relieve the nerve pain? OA usually causes severe joint pain. So if you feel pain, nerve and you should see your doctor, because you may have ruptured or herniated disc.

Exercise is an essential tool in managing arthritis. It not only reduces pain and stiffness of joints, strengthens muscles around joints strong, and increases flexibility and endurance, but gives you more energy, helps you sleep better, controlling your weight and you just made feel better.
The important thing to remember when starting a new exercise routine is to start slowly, very slowly. Flexibility (or stretching) exercises are a great way to improve range of motion. When your body allows, weight training and exercises endurance as cycling are also useful.

Choose an exercise program that you can handle, and enjoy, is very important. Think about the things you enjoy doing and then check with your doctor or therapist to make sure it goes to start and how to make more beneficial to reduce fatigue and strengthen muscles and joints and increasing flexibility.

-Flexibility (stretching) exercises to increase Gradually your range of motion
Resistance training to strengthen muscles and joints
-Cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise to increase traffic and circulation and strengthen your heart.
This may sound like a lot, especially when it is difficult to manage simple daily tasks – but if you try to integrate it into your daily routine, you will see that it will be easier as time passes.

Once you can do 15 minutes straight, you should be able to add strengthening and aerobic exercises to your routine daily.
Strengthening (resistance) exercises:
When you have arthritis, you need good muscles to reduce stress on joints. Strengthening exercises can help strengthen your muscles so they can absorb shocks and protect your joints against injury. Using weights makes your muscles work harder and helps them become stronger.
There are two types of strengthening exercises: isometric (which tightens the muscles of movement joint without insisting on the town) and isotonic (which strengthen the muscles by the joint movement). Strengthening exercises should be done every two days after the heat with some flexibility exercises.
Cardio-vascular (aerobic) exercises:

This includes walking, dancing, swimming and cycling, and others. The purpose of these exercises is to your heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles to work more efficiently. They can also lead to improved endurance, stronger bones, improve sleep, control weight and reduce stress, depression and anxiety.
Try to include aerobic activity into your fitness program three to four times per week, with a goal to work in your target heart rate for 30 minutes each session.
If you find it difficult to make you move, or simply do not know not what exercises are best to beat your arthritis, contact your local Arthritis Foundation exercise programs in your area.

How to Get Relief from Herniated Disc
December 15, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment
Within the inter-vertebral joints, the vertebrae are separated by a fluid filled pad of cartilage that acts as a cushion against impact and other tensile forces on the spinal column. Herniated disc occurs when the outer shell of one of the cartilage discs that cushion the vertebrae is damaged, making the inner jelly like substance leak out. Sudden awkward movements like bending and twisting of the back can cause the outer shell to crack resulting in this condition.
But sometimes the herniated disc affects the nerves and ligaments outside the vertebra or puts pressure on the spinal cord. The patient may experience moderate to severe pain depending on the extent of the pressure exerted by the disc that is herniated. This condition clears up on its own within a few days after a period of rest. If the pain is severe the surrounding muscles go into spasm and the recovery may take up to six or seven weeks. Surgical treatment may only be required in rare cases of this disorder.
The herniated disc can sometimes bulge out to the side of the vertebral column and exert pressure on the nerves running through the spinal column. Due to herniation, fluid leaks into the spinal canal and may damage the nerves that arise from the lower spine. This may cause problems with bladder and bowel control.
All the joints in your spinal column need regular exercise to stay healthy. Without movement the inter-vertebral disc start to shrink, the ligaments begin to lose their elasticity and the muscles around the spine become weak. A regular exercise regime also helps to maintain the weight of your body reducing stress on your spine.
Sometimes a softening agent is injected into the disc to relieve symptoms that are connected with herniated disc. The condition often settles down with time and medication and the bulge should dry out taking pressure off the nerves as scar tissue forms over the tear. Care should be taken to avoid all strenuous activities that may cause a strain in the back region.
The guidance of a physiotherapist also may be required to increase the strength of the muscles in the back so that they are better able to cope up with conditions like herniated disc. All you have to do is to religiously follow the exercise routines that are recommended. This will help you prevent further instances of this disorder.
How to Identify the Symptoms Associated with Fibromyalgia
December 10, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment
The muscle mass in your body tends to decline with age and the muscles supporting the bones also become weak. People suffering from fibromyalgia experience pain in the muscles all over the body and the sufferer is bound to experience a loss of concentration. This in turn affects the productivity of the sufferer and has an impact on their social and work life. Older women are more vulnerable to this debilitating disorder. The pain in the muscles disturbs their sleep and as a result they feel tired soon, in the early stages of the disorder.
This fatigue causes the sufferer to be distressed most of the time. In case, you are experiencing some of the symptoms as described above, it would be better to consult your medical practitioner who can confirm the onset of fibromyalgia and prescribe a course of medication to counter pain and fatigue in the body.
One of the causes of fibromyalgia may be disturbances in sleep. The sufferer usually does not get deep sleep and periods of deep sleep tend to be disrupted by light sleep. This causes pain in the muscles of the body and makes the problem concerning the lack of sleep even worse.
Another major factor which causes fibromyalgia is high levels of occupational stress. If you experience stressful events continually as a part of your work, it is likely to lead to the risk of developing this disorder. The sufferer finds it difficult to concentrate on anything and has always a feeling of tension and anxiety.
The symptoms of fibromyalgia may settle down after a few weeks of treatment. But sometimes prolonged treatment may be needed as the condition can last for a longer period in some patients.
One issue with this disorder is that it is somewhat difficult to understand the distress caused to sufferers as there is no outward sign of the ailment. So, the persons associated with providing care to the patient have to be sensitized and given proper information on the effects of fibromyalgia so that they can empathize with the sufferer and provide the best possible care and attention.
To relive the muscle pain related to fibromyalgia, your medical practitioner may put you on a course of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and supplements. You may also be asked to make certain changes in your lifestyle combined with a low intensity exercise routine in order to relieve stress, get adequate relaxation and a good night’s sleep.
To learn more about Fibromyalgia and associated symptoms, please visit Steve’s Health Answers (LINK HERE), where Steve and his dedicated team of experts will be able to give you more detailed information about what this and many other topics.
All that you Wanted to Know about Behcet’s Disease
December 9, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment
Behcet’s disease is a chronic disturbance in the body’s immune system. The immune system normally protects the body against infections and controls inflammation. Sometimes the immune system becomes overactive and causes inflammation and affects the blood vessels, in particular the smaller ones.
Rheumatoid arthritis is one such condition when your immune system attacks the cells in the layers of tissue that line the joints in your body. The immune system forms antibodies that attack the body’s own cells. This disorder is likely caused by genetic and environmental factors and it affects men and women between the ages of twenty and forty.
Oral ulcers, skin lesions and inflammation in the eye are some of the conditions that can be caused by the disease Behcet’s. Practical clinical diagnosis includes arthritis, symptoms in the nervous system and inflammation in the stomach, chest or lungs. The sufferer usually feels extremely tired. It is said that food allergies also can be the cause off this disorder.
Symptoms
* Sores in the mouth
* Rashes in the skin
* Eye inflammation
* Acne like sores are seen in the body especially in the legs
The sufferer tends to be allergic to dairy products. Redness and pain is felt in one or both the eyes. The knee joint, ankle, elbow and wrist joints are generally affected. Due to inflammation in the veins, pain and swelling is felt in the arms or legs.
Proper care has to be taken to monitor and detect the first signs (swelling, redness, heat and pain) of Behcet’s disease in order to minimize the discomfort caused by this disorder.
If the sufferer finds it very difficult to carry on the daily activities, it is better to consult a medical practitioner who will prescribe medicines to relieve symptoms of this disorder and control the immune system.
Treatment
Treatment of this Behcet’s disease is based on the diagnosis of the signs and symptoms that are caused by this disorder. Skin creams, gels and ointments are prescribed to control temporary flares in pain and inflammation. Special mouth washes are often given to reduce the pain of sores in the mouth and to ease the general level of discomfort. Immuno suppressive drugs help to control an overactive immune system and reduce inflammation throughout the body. With proper rest and medicines, the symptoms of this disorder can be controlled and the sufferer is able to lead a normal and productive life.
How to Identify Whether you have Basal Joint Arthritis
December 8, 2009 by Steve Butler · Leave a Comment
Basal joint arthritis is also known as thumb arthritis as this condition affects the joints at the base of the thumb. It is associated with typing and other activities that involve repeated movements of the hands causing inflammation in the area. Symptoms vary between individuals but pain and swelling in the thumb is felt.
The pain tends to increase with time. As a result the thumb muscles and the other muscles in the hand may grow weak making it difficult for the hand to grip causing difficulty to carry on daily activities. Pain is felt at the base of the thumb while grasping, pinching and holding objects between the thumb and the forefingers. Pain is felt when force is applied like when turning a knob or a key.
In a normal basal joint, the cartilage acts as a cushion protecting the joint from strain and injury. When this cartilage deteriorates due to wear and tear over the years, the bones of the wrist and thumb rub against each other resulting in friction and damage to the basal joint. This is the underlying cause of basal joint arthritis. A diagnosis of basal joint arthritis can be made from the description of the symptoms. Your medical practitioner may suggest ways to reduce pressure on the joint.
Symptoms
* Pain in the joints of the thumb
* Stiffness and tenderness at the base of the thumb
* Less range of motion
* Enlargement of certain bones at the basal joint
Causes:
This disorder arises as the result of a combination of factors like stress, weakness of muscles, aging, joint injury etc. This disorder develops between the ages of forty to sixty years and women are affected more than men.
Treatment:
You may be advised to splint the wrist. The splint can be worn at night or while performing activities that are likely to cause the symptoms of this disorder or aggravate the condition. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs may be useful in some cases of basal joint arthritis, though they are not to be taken in the long term.
You can reduce pain and stiffness in the joint by improving the joint movement. You can do this by minimizing activities that involve frequent use of the basal joint. The medical practitioner will advise you on ways to manage the pain associated with basal joint arthritis and prevent further deterioration of the ligaments and tendons of the basal joint.
